Sharpen Wilderness Survival Direction Finding with this Updated Classic

Be Expert with Map and Compass: The Complete Orienteering Handbook With warmer weather coming on, more of us are heading outdoors to go hiking, camping, and canoeing. If you’re among that number, you’ll appreciate this week’s DestinySurvival Amazon Pick of the Week. It’s Be Expert with Map and Compass: The Complete Orienteering Handbook, by the late Björn Kjellström and his daughter Carina Kjellstrom Elgin This is a classic book on map and compass navigation, which has been updated to include information on using GPS. Let me say at the outset that one of the reviewers on Amazon.com was dissatisfied with what could be described as scant info on GPS and ordered the previous edition. When you click on the image of the book below, the page that appears will feature this updated third edition, but you can scroll down that page and click on the image of the previous edition if you like.
One thing is for certain. As great as many of us have found GPS to be, it has its drawbacks. It’s easy to become dependent on it. But batteries in portable devices run down, or the gadget gets broken or malfunctions. Weather and physical obstacles can affect readings, too. If anything happens to satellites, GPS won’t work.
I suppose somebody could argue compasses break, too, and maps get torn, etc. But somehow we managed to navigate quite well in the past few hundred years, long before GPS came along.
What it comes down to is that map and compass skills are essential if you do any outdoor activities, especially when you’re in unfamiliar areas. You should know how to find your way, even if you do use GPS.
Be Expert With Map and Compass is a popular, easy to use guide which has helped professional and novice outdoorsmen find their way for more than 50 years. It’s the book for you, whether you’re a Scout leader, teacher, hunter or hiker.
The book deals with understanding map symbols; traveling by map alone, or by compass alone, or by map and compass together. Get info on finding bearings; sketching maps; and traveling in the wilderness.
Your outdoor survival doesn’t have to depend on expensive equipment and satellites. Click on the image of Be Expert With Map and Compass below, and order your copy today. Let this book be your guide to knowing where you are for safe outdoor adventures.
